Dendrite – receive info from other neurons. Dendrites carry signals TOWARDS the cell body.

Cell Body – Site of basic cellular activities and the nucleus of the neuron

Axon – Carries messages AWAY from the nerve. One axon per neuron!

Myelin Sheath – An insulating cover surrounding the axon that speeds up action potentials

Vesicles – Sacs within axon terminals that contain neurotransmitter

Synaptic Space – Space between two neurons where NT is released. This is the site of neurotransmission, and communication between 2 neurons. Neurons never touch!

Neurotransmitter (NT) – Chemical released from one neuron into the synaptic space that transmits the impulse to another neuron

When an action potential reaches the axon terminals of a pre-synaptic neuron, Ca++ rushes into the neuron, causing NT to be released from vesicles, into the synaptic space. The free NT then bonds to protein receptors on the post-synaptic neuron, causing an action potential to travel across the post-synaptic neuron.
